Albert Collins: Dingwalls, London

Giovanni Dadomo, Sounds, 20 January 1979

CONFESSION: WHEN it comes to blues I don't know shit from sugar. But I know what I like. Albert Collins hails from Texas, cut his first disc around 1958 and employs a distinctive D-minor tuning. Ten years ago, when white chaps were making big bucks recycling the black music of the Fifties, some of the more conscientious ones actually took the trouble to help their dues-paying peers out. In Mr. Collins' case this was West Coast band Canned Heat, who were instrumental in securing him a deal with Liberty Records for whom he cut at least three very tight, sassy and frequently sidesplitting long players.
