Anita Baker

David Nathan, Blues & Soul, 12 May 1987

YOU MIGHT assume that after winning two Grammies, a couple of Soul Train Music Awards and having a two million-plus-selling album, Anita Baker would hear the news that she swept the B&S Readers' Poll with a particular attitude. Something like, "well, gee, thanks, here's another one!" Your assumption would be inaccurate: when told that she'd swept the B&S board, Anita's response was pretty simple. "Hot damn!" she yelled (in the nicest possible way!) down the phone, taking time out from her time off in Detroit with her fiancé to call. Given the kind of hectic schedule Anita's had in the last year, tracking her down isn't always the easiest assignment but she was quick to point out that without British audiences and the British press, none of the year's success might have happened.
