Aretha Franklin: At the Victoria Apollo
Phil Sutcliffe, Sounds, 29 November 1980
PREJUDICES ON THE TABLE: I think Aretha Franklin has the most stirring, moving voice I've every heard, but I'm much less sure about the use she's been putting it to for much of the past decade. This concert, the Wednesday of her run, reflected my hopes and fears on an erratic graph of peaks and troughs. It wasn't a great show, but it was quite an experience. Perched pricily in the second row the sound was rotten because I was more or less stage-side of the PA, but I seemed to get some idea of what she was going through.
