Beck: ...Bottle of Blue

Mac Randall, Harp, March 2005

PREDICTING BECK Hansen's next artistic move is a game for fools and rock pundits only. Any sane person gave up trying long ago. Plot this 34-year-old maverick's career trajectory on a chart and you'll find plenty of zig and a whole lot of zag. In the fall of 1993, when Hansen (or, as he's always formally billed himself, just plain Beck) first made waves with a low-rent slide-guitar riff and the roughly-drawled words "I'm a loser, baby, so why don't you kill me," most folks pegged him as a novelty act.
