THE FIRST TIME I ever laid eyes on the New York Dolls was New Year's Eve, 1972, at the old Mercer Arts Center, and, quite frankly, I didn't understand all the fuss. But what did I know? I was just a wide-eyed junior between semesters at college, still excited about the release of Eat A Peach and the Grateful Dead's three-record live-in-Europe set.
