THERE'S A picture of her taken at the Fox Theater in Detroit in 1956. She's at the microphone in a sleeveless satin gown, head down, eyes closed, arms upraised, feet pressed tightly together. Behind her, a smiling bass player glances over at the piano. There's a drum set back there, too.
