Bill Withers: Who Is He…( And What Is He To You)?
Don Waller, MOJO, August 2003
HE WAS 32 years old before he got his first record contract, with the Sussex label in 1970. He'd never played a live show. He was an immediate success, writing and performing a fistful of hits that still garner significant radio airplay today – 'Ain't No Sunshine', 'Lean On Me', 'Grandma's Hands', 'Lovely Day', 'Who Is He (And What Is He To You)?'. He's been covered, sampled and hailed as a songwriting genius, the Godfather of the entire neo-soul' movement. He hasn't recorded an album in 17 years and hasn't performed on-stage in at least a decade.
