Blind Melon: Soup (Capitol)

Chuck Eddy, Spin, October 1995

'NO RAIN' by Blind Melon was a very popular song around my house two summers ago — all I can say is our life was pretty plain, we liked our point of view and we were insane. My wife compared the singer to a young Steve Winwood. My brother-in-law said the guitar solo was melodic like the Grateful Dead's Anthem of the Sun or Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow, only with faster squiggles. My daughter wanted to meet the fat little bee girl. You're allowed to increase your opinion of a record if your loved ones walk around singing it. Anyway, 'No Rain' is clearly a shoo-in for Rhino's Nuggets 2000 (Retro-Hippie Crap) compilation, along with all the other wonderful '90s Buzz Bin hits by 4 Non Blondes, Spin Doctors, Counting Crows, Oasis, Blues Traveler ('Run-Around' has the coolest harmonica since the Stones' 'Miss You' my bro-in-law sez), and Nirvana if there's room.
