EIGHT years after they were first recorded with The Band in Woodstock, Bob Dylan's "lost" basement tapes have finally been deemed fit for public consumption — though Dylan's reasons for relaxing his own ban on their release remain unclear. "The Basement Tapes" have become semi-legendary through their availability on scores of bootlegs; certainly they have been the most famous unreleased recordings of all time. They will now be issued as a double-album as soon as CBS have overcome a few art-work difficulties. NICK KENT offers a preliminary assessment.
