ONE STRANGE THING. Naturally, we group Bob Marley with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Dennis Brown, Michael Jackson: black music-makers with the stature of giants. Yet in the superleague of black pop, Marley alone was a comparatively indifferent performer. His voice was thin beside those of original Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingstone: his songwriting, lacquered by the most simple of soul melodies and chord bases, circled rather morosely around the same ideas and concerns.
