Bruce Springsteen: Born To Run

Ed Ward, MOJO, February 1995

LORD, WHAT DID I EVER SEE IN BRUCE Springsteen? But I did once see something, and even went on record as having seen it. In fact, I remember being hurt when Columbia put out that famous ad for his second album, The Wild, The Innocent, & The E-Street Shuffle, headlined with Jon Landau's epochal I-have-seen-the-future quote, and my rave review from Creem was, it seemed, the only one not quoted in it. Hell, Springsteen was a Rock Critic Consensus Artist, like Bowie and Roxy Music (and, in the first half of the '70s, precious few American artists), and I wanted to be part of the crowd.
