Bruce Springsteen: All Or Nothing
Richard Williams, Q, December 1989
"FILMS ABOUT America should be composed entirely of long and wide shots, as music about America already is," the German film director Wim Wenders wrote in 1969, while gazing at the photograph on the back jacket of Nashville Skyline and thinking of the desert panoramas of Coogan's Bluff. His assessment of the music was premature, though: not until the '70s would Bruce Springsteen evoke the physical and spiritual American heartland in music composed entirely of long and wide shots.
