LEGEND HAS IT that when novelist William Faulkner, who sometimes did hack work in Hollywood, was writing the screenplay for Land of the Pharaohs, he asked director Howard Hawks if he could take the script home and finish it. Hed be better able to focus there, he said. Hawks agreed, thinking Faulkner meant a rented bungalow in Beverly Hills, only to discover that Faulkner caught a train to his native Oxford, Mississippi.
