Chuck Berry's Influence on the UK R & B Scene
John Pidgeon, Let It Rock, April 1973
'DING-A-LING' gave Chuck Berry his only British No 1 seventeen years after his first record release, 'Maybellene'. He had five Top Ten hits in the States before 1959 – 'Maybellene', 'School Day', 'Rock And Roll Music', 'Sweet Little Sixteen' and 'Johnny B. Goode' – but in Britain only 'Sweet Little Sixteen' made the Top Twenty before the group boom of the sixties established him as a major influence.
