FROM THE MOMENT the lights were dimmed in the old St. Nicholas Arena for Alan Freed's first New York Rock And Roll Show in January, 1955, there was no doubt who the restless and clamoring crowd had come to see. The handsome, tan-skinned lad with the broad smile appeared on stage in Army khaki, on leave after three months in service.
