IF THERE WAS one band that successfully rose above punks swift and premature decline, it was the Clash. Although historically the Sex Pistols remain the most important mid-Seventies group for their shattering effect on the complacency of the music business, it was the Clashs achievement to hone and structure punks original wildly anarchistic intent into a more mature and durable form.
