Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks: Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks (Epic)
Lenny Kaye, Fusion, 14 November 1969
DAN HICKS is an ex-Chariatan, a founding father of the group which (among other things) helped to bring a stately Victorian air to early Haight-Ashbury. Now he has moved forward approximately thirty years, grounding his hot licks in the warm soil of Paris bistro two-beat jazz, sprinkling them lightly with a taste of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. The result is an album unlike any you've heard before, a slightly modern re-working of 1930's music, and one which succeeds beyond any of the Camp emphasis which might have given it birth.
