David Holmes: Ocean's 11 original soundtrack (Warner Sunset)
Tim Clifford, Rock's Backpages, February 2002
WHEN IT COMES to the soundtrack too often a compilation of old tunes represents the limit of Hollywood ambitions. Director Steven Soderbergh and DJ David Holmes, though, know it can be much, much more. Here, Holmes has created a fabulous soundscape for Soderbergh's remake of the classic Rat Pack caper flick by melding snatches of dialogue, lounge tunes, jazz, Elvis, Debussy and his own originals into a cohesive, satisfying whole. It's cheesy and sleazy, retro and modern, mood-filled, funky, driving and restless music. And you can listen to it, enjoy it and groove to it over and over even if you have never seen the film.
