Deep Purple On The Road
Jon Tiven, Circus Raves, March 1975
DAVID COVERDALE cocked his head forward and let loose with a thunderous growl to counter Ritchie's furious riff-picking. Glenn Hughes directed his bass notes at the other half of the rhythm section, mighty Ian Paice, while the subterranean keyboard churning of Jon Lord holds them all together. There is no such thing as a casual listener at a Deep Purple concert in fact, there is a moratorium on conversation in the dumbstruck audience, even the usual aisle-to-aisle wanderers are frozen still. Never have they been in contact before with such a massive instrumental onslaught as that which Deep Purple is busy providing on their latest tour. It is their second American road trip, and the first in which the new members feel at home being themselves.
