1 The Congos: 'Fisherman', from Dread Meets Punk Rockers Uptown (Selected by Don Letts) (Heavenly)
Dread Meets Punk Rockers is a fabulous collection of mid-'70s roots reggae – as perfect an introduction to the form as anyone would wish for from a single CD. In 1976 Don Letts was the DJ at key London punk niterie the Roxy. He used the position to turn on the sulphate-addled clientele to the delights of the rub-a-dub stylee. I could've chosen just about any of the 16 tracks here, but the Congos' 'Fisherman' is just sooo gorgeous: lovely song, splendid vocal harmonies and a certifiably lunatic production from Lee 'Scratch' Perry. GO DERE!!
