Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner: Country Music Is Exactly That Way. It Tells Of Life The Way It Is.

Gene Guerrero, The Great Speckled Bird, 24 May 1971

THE EXCITING thing about Porter and Dolly's music is that it continues to grow — as their new albums indicate. Porter's latest is Simple As I Am. It has a really clever Red Lane/Dottie West song, 'Funky Grass Band', which is the story of a raunchy band from Hazard, Kentucky. All the incidents in the tale are based on actual experiences of various bands, like the time the driver pulled the bus over next to the side of the mountain so when Bill Monroe stepped out to take a leak he went halfway down. Another fine song is 'That's How I Learned to Love Good Old Country Music', full of memory-pulling references to things like listening to the radio in Del Rio, Texas.
