THIRTEEN YEARS after the Beatles played their first American concert at Carnegie Hall, the Electric Light Orchestra pads a headlining set at Madison Square Garden by working in a large number of warmed over Beatles references (not to mention even more warmed over Chuck Berry riffs). In fact, both bands on this bill – ELO and one led by guitarist Steve Hillage – base their commercial strategies on production techniques derived from the Beatles.
