It's been more than 25 years since a bespectacled nerd with the unlikely name of Elvis Costello (né Declan MacManus, the son of a Scottish big-band leader) came storming out of England, combining furious, guilt-ridden blasts of pure energy like ‘Watching the Detectives’ with heart-on-the-sleeve romantic ballads such as ‘Alison’.
