Eric Clapton

John Tobler, Stuart Grundy, The Guitar Greats, BBC publications, 1983

Out of the long list of potential candidates for this book, very few names were obvious and automatic choices, but one certainty for inclusion was Eric Clapton. This happened despite an approach to his management about two years before our deadline, a time in which certain unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances prevented an interview taking place, which then culminated in our being informed by his manager that Eric could not be available for an interview due to contractual reasons. Nevertheless, his inclusion in this project was obligatory from our point of view – what follows is a profile of his history, compiled with as much care as possible, but without the benefit of his first-hand information.
