It could not have been uncommon to have to wander around the poorer suburbs of New York City in the early 1950s, especially in the evening, and to have witnessed small groups of youthful Negroes, huddled on street corners and harmonising together with an inherent sense of rhythm. The average citizen would probably not stop to listen but bypass them at a safe distance in fear of being set upon, for, unlike the theme of one of The Teenagers biggest successes, delinquents they undoubtedly were.
