TWO YEARS AGO, while working for another magazine, I rejected a rambling interview between black poet Nikki Giovanni and singer Gladys Knight. The interview wasn't that good, but the clincher was a particularly outrageous statement by Knight: "A year from now I think Gladys Knight and the Pips can be the biggest group in show business."
