LAST YEAR they tried it with Leadbelly, the year before it was Lenny Bruce, this year they're doing it with Woody Guthrie. It seems like, one by one, all the heroes go down. They fall to Hollywood and the merchandisers to become sanitised, sanctified, maybe canonised and, most important, packaged for the public.
