Heaven’s Kate: Kate Bush
Simon Reynolds, Melody Maker, 6 November 1993
ENGLAND MY LION HEART
KATE BUSH AN ENGLISH original. In 1978, that wavering, starburst voice seemed to come out of nowhere, but only because it's from that same un-American, un-rock'n'roll place as Johnny Rotten's snarl, Morrissey's plummy plaintiveness, Robert Wyatt's moist melancholy. Like the above, Kate Bush's singing is almost like "English soul" (i.e. nothing to do with faux-American blue-eyed soul).
