In The Dylan Zone: An excerpt from True Love Scars

Michael Goldberg, 'True Love Scars' (Neumu Press), July 2014

True Love Scars is a rock 'n' roll/ coming of age novel set in the late '60s and early '70s. If you liked On The Road and Catcher In The Rye and/or High Fidelity, you might like True Love Scars. The book is about Michael Stein AKA Writerman, a major Bob Dylan fan, and it's about the rise and fall of Writerman's "first love" affair, set to the music of Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones and Captain Beefheart and others. It's also about the death of the '60s, and Writerman's descent into debauchery and near madness. The excerpt that follows takes place in early 1969. Writerman, is 15, and on his first date. His hair is just starting to grow out. He wants so bad to be cool but he's not. Michael's mother has just driven Michael and this girl he likes, Lauren, all the way up to near the top of Mt. Tamalpias in Marin County, CA, and dropped them off. On the way there, when Michael's mother tried to question Lauren, she answered with quotes from Dylan's 'Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again'. Michael's mother was totally confused; Michael thought Lauren was so cool.
