Indigo Girls: Become You (Epic)
Tim Clifford, Rock's Backpages, March 2002
STEPPING BACK from the rockier edge of their last two albums, the Indigo Girls have opted for a rootsier feel on their latest offering. Its a wise move. After nearly two decades of performing together, the harmony vocals of Amy Ray and Emily Salieri are here honed to perfection. Set against a wash of acoustic guitar, accordion and mandolin, Salieris plaintive voice and Rays gruffer tones combine to create a potent slice of Americana on well-crafted tunes that range from the heartfelt Moment of Forgiveness to the singalong stomp of Bitter Root. The duo already have a fanatical cult following, but surely deserve a much wider audience.
