PERHAPS IF Joan Armatrading had opened for an artist less popular than Richie Havens, her U.S. debut would have been more fruitful. At the Bottom Line last Thursday she faced an audience of dedicated Havens fans whose general indifference was only too apparent: most of the audience chatted away happily through her set as if she wasn't even there.
