Joe Cocker: Live In LA (Cube) ***

Phil Sutcliffe, Sounds, 18 December 1976

THIS ALBUM opens with the unctuous voice of the compere saying "Thank you for your patience ladies and gentlemen" which has a certain irony as the ensuing music was recorded in 1972. It comes from a tour described by Joe's then manager and producer Nigel Thomas as a "disaster". It was supposed to pick up where Mad Dogs And Englishmen left off and instead it reeled from crisis to catastrophe and back again via chaos and cock-up.
