JACKSON IS the kind of nice guy people admire rather than warm to. He has the right sort of moves and an unimpeachable humanitarian streak; it’s just that the way he comes on unvaryingly as the hard man with a tendency to blubber somehow scents a bouquet of good intentions with liberal despair, not righteous pugnacity.
