Jon Hassell
Martin Aston, Music Week, 1990
IF BRIAN ENO, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, David Sylvian and Tears For Fears have anything in common, you wouldn't instantly think of American avant-garde composer/trumpeter Jon Hassell. But not only has he guested on their albums but Hassell is probably responsible for influencing their first steps in fusing electronics with ethnic music, and widening their multi-cultural pop sensibilities. His ninth album City: Works Of Fiction, just released by Land Records (home of Eno, John Cale and Harold Budd), could prove to be just as influential.
