TRANSATLANTIC phone calls can be a precarious undertaking at the best of times. But on this grey Wednesday afternoon, as successive international operators tried vainly to connect me with Judy Collins in New York, the telephone cables seemed more arbitrary than ever. I was trying to call her on the eve of her first British concert dates for more than two years.
