Kiki Dee: I've Got the Music in Me

In producer Gus Dudgeon and tourmate Elton John, Kiki Dee has the backing of the most successful team in Seventies pop music. If Elton and Gus say Kiki's a star, who are we to argue? Especially when she comes up with an explosive and idiom-spanning single like 'I've Got the Music in Me' to follow on the heels of her first American tour. A great radio song, Kiki's single (written by the keyboard player in the Kiki Dee Band, a guy with the unlikely name of Bias Boshell), has been mistaken with equal frequency for the long-awaited follow-up hit by Ian Lloyd (with whom Kiki shares timbre and intensity) & Stories, and a new one by Chaka Khan and Rufus. At this point in her career, it's better that she be mistaken for these artists than for Elton John – her first Rocket album of a few months ago (produced by Dudgeon and featuring John and members of his band) was a bit too close to that copyrighted sound for comfort.
