WELL, I HOPE everybody's satisfied. Back in the early '80s (you can look it up!), I was railing in Creem about the institutionalisation of surliness and slovenliness, noting that it was cool and funny and liberating when the Rolling Stones did it in 1964, but that by the time Pearl Jam came on stage 30 years later in clothing the homeless would have felt humiliated to accept as charity, it was boorish and insulting.
