NO-ONE WAS MORE SURPRISED THAN LIZ PHAIR when her precocious double-album debut became the alternative-rock succès d'estime of 1993. "I was just a neighbourhood kid who wanted to show the boys I could do it too," she says of the copiously drooled-over Exile In Guyville. "I was pretty sure we were gonna make 1,300."
