Microdisney: Liverpool Polytechnic
Penny Kiley, Melody Maker, 7 May 1988
HAVING RECOVERED from Edward Barton screaming at us that he's got no chicken but he's got five wooden chairs, seeing Microdisney was yet another shock. Somehow you don't expect them to look like this. A bunch of jolly musos and a singer, who by rights and the sound of his distinctive mellow voice, ought to be a laid-back artist clad in good humoured sensitivity and, probably, a hat. In Cathal Coughlan you've got instead this thuggish figure, hunched and arrogant, who an acquaintance describes with accuracy (and I wish I'd said it first) as a cross between a Tasmanian devil and Van Morrison.
