WAY BACK IN 1997, when Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott launched her debut album Supa Dupa Fly with the touching dedication "To my mom... I would not trade you in for six Mercedes Benz... and you know how much I love cars", the proposition that this talented Virginia-based songwriter and producer was inaugurating a new golden age of R&B would have seemed a little far-fetched. And yet, that's exactly what she was doing.
