THE FIRST TIME I met Morrissey was nine years ago, when the thin, seemingly mild-mannered singer was slightly in need of a shave; when he wore delightfully nerdy horn-rimmed glasses and short pants that revealed pale and hairy legs to all who cared to look; when his band the Smiths were scant hours away from giving the third American performance of their career.
