Now More Than Ever: Curtis Mayfield
Simon Witter, i-D, September 1987
Curtis Mayfield is the music worlds most talented unsigned superstar. A working musician since the age of eight, Mayfields inimitable work with The Impressions and on his own albums had changed the face of soul and propelled him to untouchable superstardom by the early '70s. But now the man whose poignant political invective made him literally the conscience of soul, and whose ingenious arrangements pushed the music into unexplored areas, is shamefully without a record deal, despite his obvious return to form. During his last triumphant British tour, the Superfly spoke exclusively to Simon Witter about his predicament, his plans, his politics and why Run DMC turn him on.
