'Shelter' from the Storm: Merry Clayton
Don Snowden, Los Angeles Times, 13 March 1986
MERRY CLAYTON'S spine-chilling vocal in the middle of Gimme Shelter is one of the most electrifying moments in rock history but you couldn't blame Clayton if hearing the Rolling Stones classic only brought back painful memories. The physical exertion of singing the part was so intense that the pregnant Clayton suffered a miscarriage after returning home from the session.
