DEPRESSION AND despair have their place in pop music, especially in English pop. In recent years, it's come through most tellingly in the shimmering sadness of the Smiths and, later, in the solo work of Morrissey and Suede. Kirsty MacColl — 34-year-old singer-songwriter, wife of producer Steve Lillywhite, daughter of English folksinger Ewan MacColl — also roams this turf. She glides along it rather knowingly.
