As soon as Smashing Pumpkins released Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness in October 1995, their shaven-skulled mainman Billy Corgan buttheaded his way round the media circuit telling allcomers, "Its the end of this band". But this, frankly, bald announcement proved something of a wind-up.
