IN THE trade, this is known as noodling. Noodling occurs when a bunch of undeniably talented musicians gather together and decide they've had enough of boring, straightforward musical structures. They want to strike out in fresh, previously uncharted directions – not for them such meagre considerations as rhythm or melody. The sound is all that matters.
