THE TRAGIC AND unexpected death (from drowning) on the second day of 1997 of guitarist and vocalist Randy California effectively silenced Spirit, described by Billboard chart guru Joel Whitburn as an "eclectic rock group", after a period of 30 years during which California was universally regarded as the band's key figure.
