Sub Pop: See Label For Details — An Interview with Bruce Pavitt
Cynthia Rose, Dazed & Confused, 1994
In 1979, when he was a college student, Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop. Although the hipsters around him were pushing UK imports, he decided struggling US sounds needed their own forum. Pavitt sought the kind of music passed around at gigs on cassette and soon Subterranean Pop released a few cassettes of its own. In 1984, after moving from Olympia to Seattle, Pavitt and his friend Russ Battaglia opened Fallout: a combination skateboard and record emporium.
