IT WAS 1 a.m. on a Sunday morning in Nashville. We were driving slightly unsteadily on Broad Street a strangely empty scene since the Opry moved to the extremities of town. The car radio was playing middle Country Music of often debateable quality, but occasionally, as now, a record of greater distinction would be played, almost as if by accident.
