The Bottle Rockets: Songs Of Sahm

Tim Riley, Public Arts, 3 January 2002

YOU MAY NOT have heard of Doug Sahm, but might recognize his voice from 'She's About Mover', the oldies linchpin. Those who did know him didn't necessarily think of him as a songwriter first, at least until recently. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Sahm began performing steel guitar on a local radio station at age 9. 'Little Doug' Sahm made his first record in 1955, 'A Real American Joe'. Pretty soon, as leader of the Pharoahs, he found success with hits like 'Crazy Daisy' (1959), 'Sapphire' (1961), and 'If You Ever Need Me' (1964) (not to be confused with Sam the Sham and his Pharoahs, who made 'Woolly Bully').
